Frequently Asked Questions about WinSSHD Activation
Q. I see that the activation code I received for WinSSHD depends on my installation ID. Does that mean I will have to get a new activation code if I reinstall WinSSHD?
A. Installation IDs are designed to remain the same after reinstalling. Additionally, WinSSHD tries to generate the installation ID so that it will remain the same even if the whole operating system is removed and reinstalled. Therefore, you shouldn't have any problems reinstalling WinSSHD on the same machine; after reinstallation, your existing activation code should continue to work as before.
If, for some reason, after reinstalling your installation ID does change and your activation code ceases to work, send an email to our support, describe your circumstances, enclose your new installation ID, and we will respond with a new activation code.
Q. What happens if I uninstall an licensed copy of WinSSHD from one machine, and install it on another? Can I use the same activation code on the new computer?
A. When you install WinSSHD on a new machine, a new installation ID is generated for which no previously existing activation code is valid. If you want to move your copy of WinSSHD to another machine, please send an email to our support, describe your circumstances, enclose your new installation ID, and we will respond with an activation code for your new installation.
Q. I want to move my WinSSHD installation to another machine. How do I prove that I deleted the software on the previous machine so that you will send me a new activation code?
A. Your word is proof enough. If you are moving WinSSHD to a new machine and need a new activation code, send an email to our support, describe your circumstances, enclose your new installation ID, and we will respond with a new activation code.
Q. I want to use WinSSHD on a network with no connection to the internet. Is this compatible with the WinSSHD activation scheme?
A. Yes. Whether you are activating 1 installation or 500, you can activate WinSSHD even when it's disconnected from the internet the whole time.
- If activating less than 10 installations, collect their installation IDs on a floppy. Take this floppy to a workstation that is connected to the internet. Generate the activation codes from there. Save the activation codes back to the floppy. Apply the activation codes to the WinSSHD installations.
- If you are activating 10 or more installations, see Large Scale Deployments.
Summary
Consider the WinSSHD activation code system as a speed bump, not a road block. It is there to make people slow down, to think about what they are doing; not to prevent them from driving.
Also, customers who purchase 10 or more WinSSHD licenses can opt to use a simplified activation method which does not require Bitvise's involvement in the activation of each WinSSHD installation. For more information, see Large Scale Deployments.
